Evolution And Journey Of 1 PICE To 1 Paisa

It was 1943 when first coin of the face value of 1 PICE came into the existence in the regime of George V in India. It continued to be in minted every year up to 1947 till India was declared as an Independent Country. Prior to PICE it was One Quarter Anna in the circulation. In terms of its value compared to One Rupee, it was 1/64 of One Rupee. 4 PICES = 1 ANNA and subsequently 16 ANNAS = 1 RUPEE. Coin appearing in the picture below is a coin of 1947, which can be said to be a pre-independence coin of India. Because, the Crown embedded in the coin depicts that it was minted during the British Regime.

After independence when Indian Government came into existence first Indian ONE PICE came in circulation in the year 1950. Regime of this coin can be said 1950-1955. Initially in the first year of its mintage it was a thicker coin with a thickness of 1.6 mm and weighing 3.8 gms per coin, which was later reduced from 1951 to 1955 and the thickness remained 1.3 mm and thus weight was also reduced to 23.3 gms only.

Later, in 1957 another new coin was introduced as being 1/100 of 1 Rupee. It was a new pattern of currency evaluation in a new system. Now, the older pattern was replaced with the new calculation of currency. This coin was named as "नया पैसा" means new pice/paisa. Its worth was lesser than the older PICE. Initially, the metal of this coin was Bronze which later replaced with Nickel-Brass. And, this Nickel-Brass version came in 1962 and further minted up to 1964. The coin featuring below is a Nickel-Brass coin minted in year 1963.

Finally, the journey of 1 PICE to 1 PAISA ended up with this Aluminium Coin which was minted with a very cheap metal comparative to its previous versions. Mintage of this coin started in 1965 and continued up to 1981. However, the coin remained in the circulation for a longer period also but later it was out of circulation. Though, any information regarding its official demonetization is not available.

Though, this coin is out of circulation in India but, still it is believed to be the the first and the lowest currency. And, most often it is used to be quoted as a phrase also while measuring the low status or worth of someone who is least liked or disliked by someone else by mentioning :
"He/She does not hold the worth or status of 1 Paisa even."
